The first time we meet is a little different from the treatments that follow. During this initial consultation, I will create a patient record and take time to understand your health history - both the reason for your visit and any other current or past physical or emotional concerns that may be relevant.

In most cases, I will also examine your back, shoulders, and neck, even if your visit is not directly related to problems in these areas.

The reason for this is that the body often reveals important patterns and connections that help me better understand the background of your symptoms. It may also uncover underlying tensions or imbalances that influence how I choose to structure your treatment.

This is usually followed by an examination of your feet from a reflexology perspective. The feet will often support both your health history and the findings from the physical examination of the body. Through the feet, I also gather information about imbalances within your energetic system.

In many cases, I will also ask to look at your tongue. This is known as tongue diagnosis. It does not mean diagnosing the tongue itself, but rather using the tongue as a diagnostic tool within Traditional Chinese Medicine - the system of understanding that forms the foundation of my acupuncture treatments.

Once the consultation and examination are completed, the treatment can begin. As much of the first session is devoted to assessment and understanding, the treatment itself may not be as deep as in later sessions. However, it gives me a much clearer understanding of how best to approach your treatment moving forward.
